Hi James
I have a cherished number on retention and have the certificate I now have the v5 for the car I purchased so I now want to put my reg on the car. Can this be done the same day at DVLA Leeds? Also can I tax the car at the same time?
Thanks in advance for reply your a star!
Hello Louise, Yes you will have to wait until you have the new V5C to complete your private plate transfer. In future ask the dealer to give you the V5C with the change of keeper section completed. You can then go to your DVLA Local Office and assign your private number plate whilst notifying DVLA that you are the new keeper of the car at the same time.
hi, i have just purchased a car, the dealer has sent off the change of ownership part of the v5 and i have the rest, do i have to wait for the new v5 to come back before i can put my private plate on
thanks
Hello Sally, The quick answer is; yes you can. Present the documents at the counter of your DVLA Local Office and you should be able to put your new plates onto your car the very same day. Remember to insure your new car on its current registration as soon as you have paid for it and definitely before driving to the DVLA Local Office. Once your private plate has been assigned to your new car, get in touch with your motor insurer again to notify them of your new registration number.
Hello,
I have just purchased a used car that had a private plate on it (which has now been taken off) so the old keeper is still waiting for the V5 to come back. I have my private plate on retention and was wanting to put this onto my new car. My question is can I take my retention certificate to my local DVLA office to put my plate on the car and also register myself as the new keeper once I receive the V5 from the old keeper of the car. (They are just going to forward this on to me as opposed to sending it off to the DVLA)
Hope this makes sense.
Kind Regards
Sally
Hello Dianne, Thank you for your kind comment. The names do have to match on the documents but you can still keep the car in your partners name. You can get around it by adding a ‘nominee’ on the DVLA personalised number plate document. If you haven’t yet bought your personalised number plate, you can specify the nominee at the time of purchase. If you already have the number plate document it will cost £25 to add a nominee. Just make sure the nominee matches your partners name exactly as it shows on the V5C log-book. For more information, carry out a search for ‘nominee explained’ in Google or one of the other search engines.
hi James, I just stumbled across your site and have to say what lovely and informative advice you are giving here!
My question is that I want to buy a personalised plate for my car but my car is not registered to me on the V5c and I would like to keep it that way if possible. It is insured to me and has an MOT.
Does the name have to match on V5c to the reg transfer documents or can i leave the car in my partners name?
Hello Laura, There may be a £25 nominee fee to pay depending on whether the names match on the V5C log-book for your car and the retention document. If you need to add a nominee, your dad will need to sign the V778 in two places; at the bottom of section 1 and also at section 6. Take the V778 retention document, the V5C log-book for your car, the MOT certificate and details of the expiry date for your current tax disc along to your nearest DVLA Local Office and the assignment (in the majority of cases) will be done there and then.
Hi my dad doesn’t need his personal reg plate anymore (it’s not been on his car for a while, he has a diff plate on his car) so he is lending it to me to put on my car. He’s signed the V778 retention document. Apart from this and our Mot and tax is there anything else I need? Do you know how much it’ll cost?
Thankyou!
Hello Andy, The transfer application can be presented at the counter of the DVLA Local Office but unfortunately it won’t be completed the same day. Fill in the V317 transfer form and the new keeper details on the V5C log-book for your new car. You should apply to tax your new car at the same time and the insurance certificate/cover note should show the car’s existing registration. After a week or so you will receive replacement tax discs and a V948 form which authorises you to get the new plates made. Once the tax disc are on display and your number plates are attached to your new car (and your old car) you should then notify your motor insurer of the new registrations.
James
I currently have a private plate on my car and want to transfer this to a car I am buying. Can the transfer be done same day? The new car needs taxing and is not registered to me yet. Do I need a cover note for the new car for it’s current registration or my private plate? Can I get the transfer done same day and tax it at DVLA.
Thanks
Hello Jayne, If you are going to place your registration on retention, rather than transfer it to another vehicle, then yes it can be done at the DVLA Local Office in Leeds. You can apply for retention at the same time as notifying DVLA that you have sold your car. If it was me I would want full payment for the car (rather than just a deposit) before officially changing the keeper. Make sure you include yourself as Grantee when completing the V317 form to apply for retention.
I am selling my car privately and have a personalised reg. My car has received loads of interest. Can I go to dvla Leeds and sort takin it off there? People r willing to pay me a deposit whilst paperwork done would it be easier to take a deposit and update keeper at same time???
Hello Julius, You can apply to retain your private number plate at a DVLA Local Office. You need to complete a form called a V317 and pay a fee to DVLA of £105. The private number plate will be placed on retention and you will receive a DVLA document showing your entitlement to it. DVLA will give your car a replacement registration as part of the process before the car is scrapped.
I want to scrap my car but keep my private numberplate, can I put the original numberplate on to scrap it and keep my private one. I dont have a new car yet to put my private plate onto.
Hello Suzie, Yes it can be processed the same day providing the car doesn’t already have a private number plate assigned to it that you want to retain or transfer.
Hi James,
I have a retention certificate with my private number on it and my V5, tax disc, no MOT as not needed yet… If i go to my local DVLA office will they process it there and then so that i can put my private plates on the same day?
Many thanks for your help.
Suzie
Hello Ty, What you are about to do is absolutely fine. In fact it is definitely the best way to notify DVLA of a change of keeper as there is no risk of the V5C going missing in the post. It also enables you to get your new registration displayed on your car as quickly as possible. Welcome to the private number plates club!
Hi James
I just stumbled across this thread and found it most useful!
I have just bought a personalised plate and received the certificate (V750/1). I have also just bought a used car (03 plate). The person I bought the car from kindly gave me the entire logbook (V5) as he knew I was waiting for my V750 certificate to arrive to transfer onto the car I just bought from him (just 5 days ago). He said I could take to my local DVLA office in person and get everything transferred at the same time much quicker than by post (the car into my name and also the new number plate transferred onto the car).
Im just wondering whether I (or the seller of the car I just bought) would get into trouble if I were to take the entire logbook (still in the sellers name but my details are on the new keeper supplement) down to my local DVLA office? Im concerned as I know that technically, the seller was meant to have sent a section of the V5 off to DVLA but instead he gave me the entire book so I could both register the new car in my name and also assign me new plates to the car at the same time.
Is this okay to do? (Hope that made sense!)
Many thanks
Ty
Hello Terry, Go along to your nearest DVLA Local Office to tax your car. Remember to take your insurance certificate, MOT certificate (if the car is three years old) and either the full V5C log-book or the green slip (V5C/2). Unfortunately you cannot tax your car at the Post Office as you are changing from disabled classification.
hi james i was wondering if you could help me.i have bought a car which has a disabled tax disc.how do i go about taxing it for a none disabled driver.i have insured the car but cannot tax it yet because i am unsure about what to do.thanks
Hello Ramona, If you have the new keeper supplement you should not have to pay the £25 log-book fee. Go along to your nearest DVLA Local Office with the new keeper supplement and you can request a new V5C log-book.
Hello James
I purchased a car on 30/01/11 and have only just realised that the log book has not been sent to me. I have the new keep supplement slip but I presume that the old owner has not sent off the documentation. Am I now going to have foot the cost of a new log book – I am not happy about this
Hello Cristina, You can tax the car at the DVLA Office on behalf on your boyfriend. Remember to take all the paperwork and documents with you, including the motor insurance certificate which proves your boyfriend is insured to drive his new car.
Hi
My boyfriend has just bought a car and the tax disc needs to be changed from a disabled disc,so this can’t be done online as not simply buying a new disc but transferring from one type to another. He has all the correct paperwork to change and buy a new tax disc,my question is…. if all paperwork, cheque are present and correct can i go to dvla in colton and get this done on his behalf as he will be at work on Monday?
Many Thanks
Cristina
