Q1. Why do people buy personalised number plates?
There are many different reasons; the desire to make a vehicle unique and wanting to improve its overall appearance are the main ones. A unique personalised registration displayed on a car is often viewed as the icing on the cake. Motorists like to make their cars stand out from the crowd and attractive number plates contribute to this by adding the finishing touch. The hidden benefits include masking the true age of the car, owning an appreciating asset and getting rid of the hard to remember standard registration mark.
Q2. Are personalised number plates legal?
Yes, providing DVLA rules are followed. The Cherished Transfer Scheme was introduced by the DVLA to give motorists the opportunity to personalise their vehicles. There are strict rules in place concerning the correct display of registrations on the actual number plates attached to your car
. Altering the font, tampering with the spacing or adding strategically placed fixing bolts to your number plates may result in unwanted attention from the police and could result in costly fines.
Q3. What does DVLA stand for?
DVLA stands for Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency. The DVLA is an Executive Agency of the Department for Transport. Click here to be taken to the official website of the DVLA.
Think of the DVLA as the government department responsible for keeping records of drivers and vehicles in Great Britain and Northern Ireland.
Q4. Is there a connection between Simply Registrations and DVLA?
Simply Registrations is in no way affiliated to the DVLA or DVLA Personalised Registrations
. DVLA is a registered trade mark of the Driver & Vehicle Licensing Agency. Simply Registrations is an independent company dealing in and supplying private number plates to motorists in the United Kingdom.
Q5. Do you own all of the registrations offered for sale on your website?
The short answer is no. We offer a wide selection of registrations for sale including; our own stock, registrations owned by our clients and registrations owned by trade suppliers and other cherished number plate dealers.
Q6. How come I have seen the same registration advertised for sale on several different websites?
As number plate dealers we offer more than just our own stock registration plates for sale. If Steve Edwards owns the private plate 99 SE
he could ask several companies (including Simply Registrations) to advertise it for sale on his behalf. This would result in 99 SE being seen on lots of different number plate dealers' websites or in their advertisements in the motoring press. As previously mentioned, we work alongside other dealers allowing certain carefully selected companies to publish our stock registrations in their advertisements and on their websites. That explains why you may see the same registration listed on more than one website.
Q7. Why are some personalised registrations subject to VAT?
It depends who actually owns the registration you are referring to. The majority of our company-owned registration numbers are plus VAT because Simply Registrations is a VAT registered business. Personalised registrations being offered for sale on behalf of private individuals are generally not subject to VAT. If an asterisk symbol appears next to the price on the registration that you are interested in, it indicates VAT is chargeable on top of the advertised price.
Q8. What is the difference between private, personalised and cherished number plates?
There are several official terms used by the DVLA. The combination of letters and numbers is either called a registration, registration mark or vehicle registration number (VRN). Attractive combinations are referred to as personalised or cherished registrations. The yellow and white oblong pieces of plastic that are attached to your vehicle are called number plates. Alternative names for the desirable combinations include personalised number plates, private number plates and cherished numbers. Although people use different names for them, essentially they all refer to the same product.

Q10. Is buying a private number plate a complicated process?

Yes some of the forms are a bit daunting if you've not had to complete them before, but that goes for most things. Just leave everything to us, we have performed hundreds of registration transfers and know the process inside out. All you have to do is take your car along to your nearest garage and ask them to fit your shiny new number plates to your car. Once that is done remember to tell your motor insurer that you have a new registration number so they can update your policy documents.
Q11. How quickly can I display my new personalised plates on my car?
You may be able to fit new number plates to your car the same day you complete the purchase. The introduction of online plate transfers by DVLA in March 2015 made the whole process much quicker and easier. Contact us to find out if the plate you want is available for same-day transfer.
