Money Saving Expert Forum – Over-protective Policy Denying users Good Advice?

With its paid-for affiliate links and an uncompromising user policy, is the Money Saving Expert site at risk of denying its users the opportunity to get genuine, good advice from industry experts?

This post is somewhat off topic, but important nonetheless. James Saperia, Managing Director of Simply Registrations has recently been on the receiving end of what some may consider unfair treatment by the forum moderators at the well-known website Money Saving Expert (MSE).

James has been offering his expert opinion and advice for free to users of the Money Saving Expert forum since April 2011, providing help on a variety of different motoring subjects – including, of course, personalised number plates, under the username of ‘Happytohelp’.

However, following a post he made on the MSE forum last week, James logged into his account to find that, without warning,  he had had been given an outright ban and could no longer contribute to the website. The ban was imposed due to a thread James had started to advise forum users about the recent announcement that the Government may be changing the rules on purchasing car tax, to allow drivers to do so without providing evidence of a valid insurance policy. In order to provide a point of reference and further information, James linked to the article on his company’s website from his post on the MSE forum.

Now, as anybody familiar with the Simply Registrations website is aware, the business does not sell car tax or insurance products of any kind, nor are there any affiliate links from this company website – but the post was presumably deemed to be of a commercial nature and therefore subsequently led to James being banned indefinitely and his posting privileges removed.

Selective Linking Policies – Protecting users or Limiting Advice?

Martin Lewis
The Money Saving Expert site recently published a blog post by Martin Lewis, which talks about the injustice of forums such as MSE being ignored as potential social networks. He wrote that this may be because “they’re seen as closed communities” – but with such a rigid stance on allowable advice, perhaps the real reason is that they don’t offer the same freedom as other social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter.

While it’s understandable that forums need to have rules in place, when these rules are ineffectively policed, users are potentially denied good advice in favour of the site owners’ over-protective stance. So the question is; if a site protects its own revenues by restricting relevant and helpful advice from industry experts, does that negate the site’s intended purpose to offer support and help to its users? Martin Lewis and the MSE site has done a lot to help its users, especially when you look at the PPI scandal and the amount of people who have been able to reclaim unfair payments made through mis-selling, however it would seem a shame if other support was hindered due to a poorly moderated policy.

‘Happytohelp’ is no longer able to Help – and it’s the Users that Lose Out

As a regular contributor to the Money Saving Expert forum, James has placed 86 posts and been thanked 49 times for the advice that he offered. This advice, just like the post that lead to his ban, has always been focused on helping other users to make better decisions. Quite often his advice has diverted people from making mistakes which could have led to financial penalties. An example of this can be seen here.

Ultimately, the posting policy on Money Saving Expert doesn’t seem to work. If you link to a commercial website that has not been approved as one of MSE’s revenue-generating affiliates, even if there’s no chance of making money from your post, it appears that you’re banned from further contributions and have to appeal – hoping your ban will be lifted so that you can rejoin the community. This means that while Money Saving Expert continues to make an income from approved commercial links, the users that make up the community and ultimately add to the site’s success could potentially lose out on relevant and important information. So now the Money Saving Expert community has lost its resident personalised registrations expert and, no doubt, other industry experts along the way.

It Started with a Tweet: Social Media Interaction leads to New Partnership

Local businesses fight the economic downturn by joining forces to give clients the finishing touch.

It seems that you can’t switch on the TV, go online or open a paper these days without reports on the tragic state of the economy – but that hasn’t deterred two local Yorkshire businesses from working together towards a more successful future.

Networking has always been an essential part of building business connections, and a meeting of minds through the social media network Twitter has helped Wakefield based Simply Registrations embark on a new collaborative journey with Doncaster prestige car retailer, Portland Autos.

As the two businesses built up a rapport through a series of tweets, it soon become obvious that their services could sit neatly side by side, in order to provide their client-base with a higher level of customer satisfaction and a truly personal service – essential for recommendations and reputation, which many businesses rely on in these turbulent financial times.

James Saperia, Managing Director of Simply Registrations says: “Networking with other local businesses can be invaluable and luckily, one well-placed tweet led me right to Portland Autos’ doorstep.” He goes on to say: “We set up a meeting and soon realised that working together could give us both more exposure. Portland now offers the complete package; a luxury vehicle complete with a personalised registration saving the client both time and money.”

The first time the two businesses joined forces was when a Portland customer was going to buy her private number plate separately, from a major national number plate dealer, after purchasing her latest car from Portland. However, with this new connection already established, they advised her that they could take care of it and supply everything as part of the service, offering a fantastic cost saving.

Portland Autos & Simply Registrations Working Together

What started with a tweet has resulted in this first mutual success story – one very satisfied local lady is now the proud owner of a beautiful Bentley convertible, courtesy of Portland Autos and a relevant, personalised number plate from Simply Registrations. “The end result is exactly what both consumer and seller wanted – a happy ending” says James Barthorpe, Sales Manager of Portland Autos, who adds: “The customer managed to get two individual services supplied to the highest standard, while both businesses supported each other through to completion of the sale – everyone wins!”

Both companies are now looking forward to working together in the future, with more combined deals planned to help improve their performance and provide added value to their customers.

With organisations the world over suffering the fate of the financial crisis, it’s great to see that networking and support can help to drive local businesses towards a brighter future.

Removing the Insurance Check when Taxing a Car

We all know how frustrating it can be trying to locate all of the necessary paperwork when you need to buy your new tax disc – especially when, in this digital age, so many insurers fail to send out hard copies of your insurance certificate in the first place. However, if Roads Minister Stephen Hammond has his way, producing evidence of insurance when renewing your road tax may soon become a thing of the past.

Car Tax DocumentsThe current requirement for producing insurance evidence in official form when you arrive at the post office, ready to sort out your tax, can be a real headache for some road users. The trouble isn’t just that an emailed certificate of insurance is often unacceptable to the person behind the counter either – if you’ve just purchased a car that doesn’t come with a current tax disc, it can be even more of an issue.

While you may have made the necessary phone call to your insurance company or sorted out cover via the Internet, it may be a while before any paperwork, electronic or otherwise, gets sent to you – and no insurance means no tax: end of story.

Two sides of the argument

So if you’ve ever found yourself in one of the above predicaments, you may be interested in the consultation regarding road tax which is open for comment until 26th November. The consultation is designed to decide whether the production of a valid insurance certificate should continue to be a requirement when purchasing road tax, or whether it’s no longer needed. According to the DVLA’s press release announcing the consultation, Hammond believes that there’s no benefit in this process now that insurance checks can easily be made against the Motor Insurance Database, under the Continuous Insurance Enforcement rules. It’s also probably no coincidence that the removal of this stage in the purchase process stands to save the Government in the region of £1.2 million per year.

Unfortunately, it seems that since the news to reconsider this procedure was announced, not everybody has taken a positive outlook. The director of AA Insurance, Simon Douglas, has voiced concerns that this will send out the wrong message to road users and encourage people to avoid taking out insurance or to delay renewal. With the current system automatically reminding drivers if their insurance has expired when buying their tax online, or refusing tax for drivers who can’t produce insurance evidence in person, Douglas believes that it will be much easier to overlook any avoidance or lapse in regards to cover.

Have your say!

So where do you stand on the argument? Do you agree with Hammond that cutting out the red tape is a good idea? Or, like Douglas, do you worry that if this lack of insurance check becomes law, more people will risk driving without insurance? If you have an opinion that you want to share, you can make your comments on the consultation by clicking on the link and following the instructions: https://www.gov.uk/government/consultations/remove-the-insurance-check-when-taxing-a-vehicle

The Latest Number Plates News from Simply Registrations

Apologies for the lack of blog posts recently, it has been all go at Simply Registrations. If you prefer short and sweet news updates rather than our lengthy blog posts, you can follow @JamesSaperia on Twitter for regular motoring and car registration news updates.

Sales of private number plates have been healthy in the past few weeks. Our latest VAT quarter ended on 30th September and we managed to complete the sales of both 7 CJN and 9 BJR just before the deadline. Other notable registration sales from stock include 10 BAS, 5 JDF and 97 GB. We are now eagerly looking for quality personalised plates to buy for stock and have offers pending. The one I really want to buy is a rare single-digit ‘SG’ registration from the 1920’s. We have made a strong offer which should result in a deal being concluded shortly.

The majority of our sales enquiries arrive as emails and also via the contact form on the simplyregistrations.co.uk website. As a consequence a large chunk of our marketing budget is now spent keeping the website up-to-date and making improvements where necessary. We recently upgraded our hosting package which should mean a much faster browsing experience for all of our website visitors.

We are also very fortunate to receive quite a lot of business by way of recommendation. Many of our happy clients have friends and associates on the lookout for unique personalised number plates. To help spread the word we have just had some new promotional flyers printed as they seem to get a better response than simply handing out business cards. If you would like a few flyers to handout to your friends or customers please get in touch.

It has been a long time since Simply Registrations paid for any advertisements in printed media such as car magazines or motoring sections of newspapers. However, there are some cracking rates available on advertising space right now. We have taken a half-page advert in Top Marques Magazine which will be on sale from the 23rd of October. Rather than just listing columns of registrations in tiny print, we have tried to make our advert a little bit different with the aim of attracting visitors to our website. Pick up a copy of Top Marques Magazine in a couple of weeks time and let us know what you think.

We are also working on a press release which highlights the power of networking and referrals in business. The sale of the private number plate 7 CLS to a partner in an accountancy firm in South Yorkshire led to several new clients being introduced to Simply Registrations. Subsequently three South Yorkshire based business owners have now added the finishing touch to their cars (with our help of course) and a new working relationship with a prestige car retailer has been formed. The first joint-deal with the car retailer was completed a couple of weeks ago when a customer asked for her new Bentley to be supplied complete with private number plates. It is great when local businesses combine for mutual benefit and more importantly for the benefit of their clients.

1 REG

There is one other significant update to make you aware of in this blog post. We have been asked to locate buyers for two very exclusive personalised registrations; 1 REG and VKY 1. If you happen to know a Reg or a Vicky with a desire to make their cars stand out from the crowd, please point them in our direction. VKY 1 is very sensibly priced and is already attracting interest. The owner of 1 REG is not in a particular hurry to sell but will listen to close offers.

New Personalised Registrations Browse Feature

We are always looking for ways to improve the simplyregistrations.co.uk website. When you search for a personalised registration on some websites, you are presented with close matches or similar registrations to what you searched for. Our research suggests that someone looking for a ‘SLC’ plate is not interested in seeing ‘SIL’ registrations. For that reason, if you search for a ‘SLC’ registration with us, you will only see ‘SLC’ registrations in the results.

We often receive enquiries from motorists who would like private number plates for their cars, but they do not know exactly what combination they are looking for. “My name is Alistair Jones so let me know of anything that you think is suitable” would be a typical example.

You used to be able to browse all of the personalised registrations on the Simply Registrations website from ‘A’ all the way through to ‘Z’. It worked fine for Alan who was interested in registrations beginning with ‘A’, but it was a pain for Simon who had to go through lots of pages of unrelated registrations until he eventually got to see the ‘S’ registrations. It was badly designed and probably led to a lot of our website visitors searching elsewhere for their ideal number plates.

The feedback we were getting suggested a new browse feature was required. Simon wants to be able to view all of the ‘S’ registrations and in the fastest possible time. So it is with great pleasure we present to you, the new personalised registrations browse feature.

Browse personalised registrations screenshot

The newly designed ‘Browse all Registrations’ page, enables you to head directly to the results you want to see. Just click on the appropriate alphabetical letter for your name. No more sifting through pages of unrelated personalised plates which have no relevance to you.

Of course we have retained the original search facility, so anyone looking for a specific registration can still see exact-matches. You just have to decide which of the two features suits you best. Are you a ‘browser’ looking for inspiration, or are you a ‘specific searcher’ who knows exactly what you want?

Give the new ‘Browse all Registrations’ page a try and let us know what you think. We always listen to ideas or suggestions which may improve the simplyregistrations.co.uk website. Our goal is simple; we want to make it as easy as possible for you to choose your new personalised registration and help you add the finishing touch to your car.
